Surgical Procedures To Treat Acne
May 15, 2007
Today in the American Chronicle there is a report on the surgical procedures available to treat acne. In the report there is a mention of microdermabrasion which is earning a reputation as a miracle cure for acne. It would first appear strange that such a procedure is mentioned along other surgical treatments such as drainage of large cystic acne as microdermabrasion is non-invasive.
The procedure has been compared to sandblasting and, in a primitive sort of way, this is true. However rather than sand fine medical grade crystals are used in the treatment and instead of a high pressured hose the crystals are blown (under pressure) onto the skin via a small wand. The wand also sucks up the debris (mainly dead skin cells and residual crystals).
Microdermabrasion has been proven to unblock the pores of the skin and loosen whiteheads therefore producing healthier skin that is less likely to develop acne.
Furthermore microdermabrasion stimulated the production of collagen which helps tone and tighten the skin giving a much more youthful texture and appearance. Over a period of several months (usually 10 monthly treatments) the visible improvements in the skin are astounding. Many now choose microdermabrasion in preference to other treatments including chemical peels and even the surgical procedure from which it developed, which is dermabrasion.
