Trying Microdermabrasion At Home

Just back for a short break from our usual visits to annual music festivals and I have decided that it's time I took a closer look at home microdermabrasion with a view to providing a few important tips and a little advice about the various kits that are available at the moment.

Microdermabrasion is a relatively new cosmetic procedure that has been gaining popularity over the last few years in salons and clinics across the globe. In many respects the best results are gained by having a course of about ten professional treatments. However most cosmetics companies now produce microdermabrasion kits which have been specifically designed for use in your own home. Unfortunately the quality of these kits, the results obtained and the overall cost of the kits vary considerably.

At Home Microdermabrasion Tips

1. Before you start pampering your skin with the latest kits on the market you should spend some time familiarizing yourself with the microdermabrasion technique. By gaining a comprehensive knowledge of the treatment you will be able to understand, fully, the benefits of one microdermabrasion system over another and therefore you will make the best decision on which kit to use at home.

2. Your skin is your body's largest organ and, as such, is extremely important to good health. While undergoing any treatment it is important that you look after yourself. You should eat well and exercise often. You should also ensure that you drink plenty - preferably pure water or fresh fruit juice.

3. Take a photograph of your face! Not many consider this but it is important that you can clearly define the improvements to your skin over a given period. It is very easy to fool yourself that all your efforts have produced better looking, healthier and more supple skin when, actually, there is very little difference. By taking your own before and after photographs you will be able to gauge the effectiveness of your chosen home microdermabrasion kit.

Please Note: It is very important that you take your photographs under the same conditions as lighting can have a profound effect upon the appearance of the skin. Maybe you should take a photo of yourself in the bathroom mirror at night (with the lights on). This will produce similar conditions for each photo.

Home Microdermabrasion Kits

As mentioned earlier the quality and price of home treatments vary widely. Most home microdermabrasion kits consist of aluminum oxide micro-crystal creams and other skin rejuvenating lotions. Most include some form of equipment to apply the lotion and/or to carry out the microdermabrasion. The hand-piece is usually an exfoliating foam applicator but it is becoming more common to see true microdermabrasion machines included. Obviously those kits using a machine with a wand are far more expensive than those using only creams.

Kits employing the use of a machine and wand offer true microdermabrasion. The machine blasts crystals down a tube and into the wand which is used to direct the crystals onto the skin. The crystals then exfoliate the skin and the machine sucks up the waste via the wand in a circular motion. (Newer microdermabrasion machines are advertised as crystal free but these types of microdermabrasion machines are not usually found in home kits).

The success or failure of the treatment depends on the micro-crystals and how well they work. In the next article we will take a look at some of the home microdermabrasion kits on the market at the moment.
