Microdermabrasion Benefits
Microdermabrasion is a popular cosmetic procedure that has many benefits especially when compared to alternative skin care treatments offered by modern medical aesthetics clinics and cosmetic surgeons. When considering the suitability of the patient for treatment the aesthetician weighs up those benefits and compares them to those offered by other treatments.
Microdermabrasion is a facial procedure which removes the very top layer of the skin using abrasive micro crystals or other abrasive materials. The process has been describes as mini-sanding or mini-sandblasting but this makes it sound far more aggressive than it really is. The most important benefit for me was the almost total lack of pain, it seems even too much to describe it as causing mild discomfort as I hardly noticed a thing when I first tried it. However I am aware than many people do get mild irritation following their first few sessions.
Most people look to the results of microdermabrasion. In almost all cases excellent results are gained even after their first visit to the salon. It is therefore of no surprise to find that most people would quote the results as the most important benefit of microdermabrasion! Yes we all would love to young healthy skin all of our lives but this is virtually impossible but by leading a healthy life and treating our skin well we can certainly extend the period that our skin looks great. Microdermabrasion is one of those treatments that, once you have tried it, you will continue to use it on a regular basis.
The fact that so many use top-up sessions regularly shows how people see it as a vital part of their skin care regime. Once you have had your initial treatment (usually 6-10 monthly appointments) you will find that you will only need another session every two months, sometimes less often, especially if you are young. This brings us to another benefit, the cost of microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is generally far cheaper than the other cosmetic treatments available but the fact that top-ups are required less frequently further enhances the affordability of it.
Safety
In our attempts to lessen the appearance of facial wrinkles we are often prepared to go take extreme measures. Often, even the most aggressive, treatments improve the aging appearance of the skin far less than we would really like. Some lotions and creams even have no effect at all on even fine lines and wrinkles but we continue to apply the skin care product in the vain hope of obtaining youthful looking skin. Sadly there are even cases where the treatment offered could be considered dangerous, especially if being carried out by somebody with little experience in the procedure or treatment offered.
You will be very pleased to hear that NONE of this applies when we look at microdermabrasion. Firstly the aesthetician operating the machine will, at the very least, have been thoroughly trained in the use of it. Furthermore, in most cases, the operator will have vast experience in the field of skin care and medical aesthetics. There are no harmful chemicals used in the procedure and the crystals used in the microdermabrasion machines are inert, meaning that they cause no harm. The procedure is non-invasive and is easily carried out at the clinic without the need for an extended stay. This brings us to a further benefit, that of the time the treatment takes.

A typical session of microdermabrasion only takes from 30 - 45 minutes and you are able to return to what you were doing previously almost immediately. The only thing that could stop you from returning immediately was if your skin was a little too red and you had to wait for it to settle. Most salons do pre-treatments and post-treatment facials to prepare the skin and then soothe it afterwards. In almost all cases the skin immediately looks and feels much better with a healthy pinkish glow. This is of enormous benefit to those who work in a busy city center office as you can often arrange your appointment for during your lunch break. This has lead to many referring to microdermabrasion as the "lunch break facial" or "lunchtime peel".
Benefits of Microdermabrasion For The Acne Sufferer
Now here is one benefit that is really worth writing home about. Yes there are many treatments for acne available today such as anti-biotic's and creams but microdermabrasion helps the skin to help itself fight the outbreak. Although an area of skin that has active acne can not be treated it is perfectly safe to treat the skin around it. The wand used has a fine tip that can be manipulated to treat the maximum skin area.
The abrasive nature of the procedure removes the dead skin cells to reveal new skin underneath. The removal of the top layer of skin helps greatly in unblocking the pores of the skin thus reducing the risk of the formation of new pimples, zits, spots, or whatever you wish to call them. Furthermore the occurrence of open pores is vastly decreased further adding to the clarity of the skin. At the next appointment the skin should be vastly improved and a larger area of skin may be treated. By the end of the course the acne should be gone completely and a further, future outbreak far less likely, especially if top-up treatments are used.
In summary the benefits of microdermabrasion are extensive. There are many more not mentioned in this article but the most prominent are the aspects of safety, the relatively low cost and most of all the incredible results gained. I also mentioned the lack of discomfort which I place above all others but then I always have been, and will remain, a coward.
