Microdermabrasion

Our skin is the largest organ in our body and it is therefore crucially important that we keep it healthy. Besides being the largest organ it is also the most visible! Women have always been aware the having healthy looking skin is an asset worth the effort and today many men are now learning that a good skin care regime should be part of their daily routine.

The skin is made up of different types of cells each doing their own particular task. Every minute of the day old cells die and are replaced by new, fresh and healthy cells. Many of the skin care problems we suffer are associated with the normal aging process - which many of us try to fight by using skin care products and even cosmetic surgery. Older skin generally suffers from a dullness but more obvious are the many wrinkles which start to appear even in early life. However the skin can also develop differences of color tone and blotches or darker patches can appear anywhere on the skin's surface.

Since ancient times women have used cosmetics to enhance their beauty and treat their skin. Over the centuries increased understanding resulted in better products and today the skin care industry is huge. There have been many technological advances in recent decades and many procedures have been developed to fight the ageing process. Many creations claim spectacular results such as the removal of fine lines and wrinkles while others make bolder claims that their product can remove deep wrinkles, blotches, acne and a whole host of skin complaints. Among the most recent developments is the non-invasive cosmetic procedure called microdermabrasion or micro-dermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion - What Is It?

Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic technique/procedure which aims to enhance skin by removing the dead cells and stimulating the skin into producing new cells to replace them. It is also believed that the process stimulates the production of collagen which gives the skin a more supple texture and look. microdermabrasion is non-surgical and does not use lasers. The procedure is chemical and acid free in that it is not a form of chemical peel (obviously aftercare involves lotions etc).

The Microdermabrasion Machine

The procedure is usually carried out in a salon or clinic by a person who has been specially trained in the use of it. A wand (hand piece) performs releases crystals onto the skin's surface, these crystals are very, very fine (hence the term micro!) and they gently rub against the skin, this process is called abrasion. The abrasion removes the topmost layer of the skin only as the surface of the skin is usually only dead cells. The wand also vacuums the surface of the skin to remove the debris but it also helps stimulate the blood circulation and collagen production. These two processes occur simultaneously in a circular motion.

The abrasion reveals the new cells of the skin and the increases blood flow and collagen production lead to much smoother skin which has improved elasticity and is more supple. The whole session will usually last around half an hour or maybe as long as 45 minutes as the quality of your skin and the relative thickness can have a profound impact on the amount of work required.

Most clinics advise a course of treatments over several months. A course of six treatments over six months will give spectacular results. Some people attempt to have weekly sessions but this can irritate the skin and many consider this approach far too aggressive.

The Results

Many are surprised to find that there is a marked improvement after only the very first session of microdermabrasion. Immediately following your appointment your skin will have a pink glow which will settle within a short time to leave a far healthier looking pinkish glow of fresh skin. Your skin will immediately feel softer and smoother.

The same results are gained at each session but the treatment is progressive. Each treatment has an effect upon minor skin imperfections including fine lines and wrinkles. However, if you have acne scars or more severe skin imperfections such as blotches you will need to have more session before there are results which could be described as spectacular. Microdermabrasion has been shown to have a marked effect on scars and it can even remove small scars and help reduce the visibility of larger ones.

Who Is A Suitable Candidate For Microdermabrasion?

It has been described as a lunch-break procedure. This is because it can take only 30 minutes and it is painless. Furthermore the recovery time is minimal and within the hour you will be ready to return to work looking fresh and rejuvenated. Most people are suitable candidate for microdermabrasion and due to the prior facts it is perfect for office workers on a tight schedule, students at college and anybody else who would like a quick and easy treatment with excellent results.

Safety

Microdermabrasion is universally accepted as safe. As explained earlier all operators are trained professional who understand the nature of different skin types. It is therefore suitable for all skin types. Due to the lack of chemicals used it is suitable for most sensitive skins but if you have extremely sensitive skin you can have it done on a small test area first.

If you have active acne the areas most active can not be treated at this time. It is still possible to have it done on those areas not active and even smaller areas in between. This greatly helps in the fight against acne as the areas not active increase over the period of repeat session. Eventually all of the face can be treated as the amount of active acne subsides.
